A Fab Four

Simon has actually managed to stick with me for four years now. Today we celebrate the anniversary of our relationship, only two months before we create a whole new anniversary, our wedding day.

I want to be profound, I want to wax lyrical about how wonderful he is, I want to fill these virtual pages with how much he means to me and how much he has changed my life, but most of all, I just want to say I love him. ¡Simon, te amo!

Apparently it’s love if they are the first thing you think about in the morning and the last thing you think about at night. But Simon is with me all the time. Every decision I make, every movie I see, every book I pick up, I wonder how it will affect him, if he will enjoy it, how much I would love to share it with him. I enjoy my life more with him in it. I enjoy films and TV shows, nights at the theatre and days wandering the streets of Edinburgh; I enjoy them all so much more when he is by my side.

I love introducing Simon to things that have been part of my life for years. I’ve won him over with Doctor Who and I’ve got him on board with Battlestar Gallactica. He’ll enjoy a game of rugby with me and he’s even embraced my love of karaoke. However, I haven’t yet managed to convince him to share in my obsession with The Beatles. Today is also the anniversary of the release of The Beatles White Album, the Fab Four’s most insane, most experimental record and one of my favourites. I glanced through the playlist, trying to find a song that might add some poignancy to myself and Simon’s anniversary… um…

“Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face
And in the evening she’s a singer with the band”

  • – Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

“Deep in the jungle where the mighty tiger lies
Bill and his elephants were taken by surprise
So Captain Marvel zapped in right between the eyes
All the children sing…”

  • – The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill

“I don’t know how you were diverted
You were perverted too”

  • – While My Guitar Gently Weeps

“She’s well acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand like a lizard on a window pane.
The man in the crowd with the multi-colored mirrors on his hobnail boots.
Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy working overtime.
A soap impression of his wife which he ate and donated to the National Trust.”

  • – Happiness Is a Warm Gun

No? Well, how about this?

“It took a long long long time
Now I’m so happy I found you
How I love you
So many tears I was searching,
So many tears I was wasting, oh
Now I can see you, be you
How can I ever misplace you
How I want you
Oh I love you”

  • – Long, Long, Long

To be honest, I’ll be happy if he just hums along with Yesterday, Hey Jude and Let It Be. So, all day today, I’ll be listening to Rocky Raccoon, Helter Skelter, Blackbird and that weeping guitar. And I’ll be thinking about Simon, the reason I have to smile everyday, the reason I’ve been smiling every day for four wonderful years. x
